  • Great fun. The folk that were in the group were an interesting friendly bunch. It was a well organised tour. G adventure set out all the information clearly and succinctly. Would consider doing another one. There was no issues with the booking process, and everything went smoothly.

  • A tour devised well for independent travellers, providing reasonable quality of accommodation, but excellent flexibility for the travellers to choose their own restaurants etc. managed by a totally committed and professional CEO. Most of the hotels were fine, but there were some not so good. Also, the single person supplement could not be justified in some of the hotels.

Frequently asked questions

  • What types of accommodation are included in this tour?

The tour includes stays in hotels (10 nights), traditional inns (1 night), and traditional inns with shared facilities (2 nights).
  • Are hotel rooms generally large in Japan?

No, hotel rooms in Japan are typically small due to space limitations. Rooms for couples usually feature two twin beds rather than one large Queen or King bed.
  • What should I know about traditional Japanese inns and shared bathing facilities?

Traditional inns (Ryokan and Minshuku) often feature tatami floors, futon beds, and Japanese-style baths. Some traditional inns on this tour may only offer shared bathing facilities, which are open, same-sex bathing areas with individual shower stations. This is an essential part of Japanese culture for relaxation and community.
  • What is the policy regarding tattoos, especially when using shared bathing facilities?

Tattoos are not common or widely accepted in Japan. While there is no cause for concern generally, it is best to cover your tattoos when possible, and you may not be permitted to enter public spas or onsens (hot springs) if you have them.
  • What modes of transportation are used during the tour?

The tour primarily uses public transportation, including the Shinkansen (bullet train), local trains, subways, trams, ferries, public buses, and a significant amount of walking.
  • Are there any luggage restrictions for train travel?

Yes, on the Shinkansen (bullet trains), luggage must be less than 160cm in total dimensions (height + width + depth). Luggage between 160-250cm will incur a fee per leg of the journey and is subject to availability. Luggage over 251cm is prohibited. It is highly recommended to travel light as you will need to carry your own luggage through busy train stations and up stairs.
  • What is the required physical fitness level for this tour?

This tour has a physical rating of 3. You should be prepared to spend the majority of the day on your feet, walking an average of 15,000 steps daily, and capable of carrying your own luggage through busy train stations and streets, including up and down stairs.
  • Which meals are included in the tour price?

One breakfast and one dinner are included in the tour price. Generally, meals are not included to offer maximum flexibility in dining choices based on individual tastes and budgets.
  • Can dietary restrictions be accommodated?

The CEO will strive to cater to all dietary requirements/preferences, but please be aware that vegetarianism and veganism are very uncommon in Japan, which may lead to a more limited selection.
  • What is the typical group size for this tour?

The maximum group size is 15 travelers, with an average group size of 12.
  • Who is the tour leader, and what is their role?

A Chief Experience Officer (CEO) accompanies the group throughout the trip. Their role is to facilitate your travels, provide information on places visited, offer suggestions for activities and local dining, and generally enhance your experience with broad cultural and historical knowledge.
  • What optional activities are available during the tour?

Optional activities include visits to Myoryuji Ninja Temple, Kanazawa Castle, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa; Sake Street visits and bike rental in Takayama; Mt. Misen visit in Miyajima; and in Kyoto and Tokyo, activities such as Gion walks, Zen gardens, various shrines and museums, and shopping districts.
  • What currency is used in Japan, and what should I know about money exchange and credit cards?

The currency is Japanese Yen (JPY). ATMs that accept Visa, Mastercard, and Debit Cards are available at Post Offices and 7-11 convenience stores. Credit cards are not widely accepted for purchases outside of some restaurants and department stores. Money exchange is available at Post Offices, some banks, and hotels but can be a slow process.
  • What is the tipping custom in Japan?

Tipping for service is not practiced in Japan and can cause confusion. However, tipping your CEO is customary in the travel industry, with a guideline of $5-7 USD per person, per day.
  • What are the health considerations for travelers on this tour?

It is recommended to consult your doctor for up-to-date medical information before departure. Travelers should carry a First Aid kit and personal medications (in original packaging with a doctor's prescription). Be aware that medical facilities may be remote at times, and tour leaders cannot administer drugs. A medical questionnaire signed by a physician is required for pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Is travel insurance required for this trip?

Yes, travel insurance is compulsory. It must include a minimum of USD 200,000 coverage for medical, repatriation, and emergency rescue. It is strongly recommended to also cover personal liability, cancellation, curtailment, and loss of luggage/personal effects. Proof of insurance will be required by your CEO.
  • What is the minimum age to join this tour?

Travelers must be 18 to travel unaccompanied. For minors traveling with a guardian (21 years or older), the minimum age is 12.
  • What is the recommended dress code to respect local customs?

In Asia, the dress standard is more conservative. It is recommended to pack loose, lightweight, long clothing. When visiting temples, shrines, or other holy sites, please dress respectfully, avoiding very short shorts/skirts and singlets/tank tops.
  • Are there laundry facilities available during the tour?

Some hotels offer laundry facilities, but they can be expensive. Your CEO can direct you to self-service coin laundries in larger cities. Bringing non-polluting/biodegradable soap for hand washing is suggested.
  • How much emergency money should I bring?

It is recommended to have access to at least an additional USD $200 (or equivalent) as an emergency fund for unforeseen circumstances.
  • Are international or local flights included in the tour price?

No, international flights are generally not included in the tour price. There are also no internal flights on this trip itinerary.
  • What are the arrangements for solo travelers?

Single travelers on group trips are paired in twin or multi-share accommodation with someone of the same sex, as there is no single supplement. However, nights 4, 5 in Takayama, and night 11 in Kawaguchiko may have shared facilities or different rooming arrangements even if you typically opt for a 'My Own Room'.
